Snout Saver is a balm for a dry, crusty nose. Rub a little in at bedtime. It softens the crust and keeps the skin from drying out overnight.

Ingredients, and what they do

Shea butter: a butter from the nut of the shea tree, and it softens the crust on the nose.
Hemp seed oil: oil pressed from hemp seed, and it is rich in omega fatty acids that help dry skin hold moisture.
Coconut oil: oil pressed from coconut, and it softens the hard surface.
Kukui nut oil: oil from a Hawaiian tree nut, and it is light and sinks in fast.
Grapeseed oil: oil pressed from grape seeds, and it is high in vitamin E.
Jojoba oil: a liquid wax from the jojoba bush, and it spreads thin over the nose.
Candelilla wax: a wax from a desert shrub, and it holds the moisture in overnight.
Vitamin E: a vitamin, and it stops the oils in the tin going off.

There is chamomile and rosemary extract in it too. Kukui is a tree nut. No water, no petroleum jelly, no parabens. Candelilla instead of beeswax, so this tin is vegan. Keep away from cats.

Give it a fortnight

In the best study we know of, a balm used daily on 39 dogs improved a crusty nose by about 37% over two months. Slow, and real.

• The fronds lie flatter and lift away.
• The surface goes from bark to leather under your thumb.
• Fewer flakes on the bridge of the nose.

Short enough not to be eaten

The tongue reaches the nose in a second, so do it at bedtime with a chew. Some gets licked off, which is why the recipe is plain.

How much, and how long a tin lasts

• A pea-sized amount, massaged in.
• Once or twice a day, bedtime being best.
• Also the chin, lip edges and dry muzzle patches.
• Not in a warm damp face fold, which needs to stay dry.

A nose takes far less than four paws, so a 15 g tin is about twelve weeks of nightly care. Use within 6 months of opening.

When to see a vet

See a vet if the nose is cracked open, bleeding or sore, losing its colour, or changing at the same time as the pads.
