Paw Shield is a wax you put on before the walk. It sits on top of the pad, so salt and grit stay on the wax and not on the skin. You rinse it off at home.

Ingredients, and what they do

Mango butter: a soft butter from the mango stone, and it softens the pad.
Beeswax: the wax that bees make, and it forms the film that sits on top of the pad.
Carnauba wax: a hard wax from a palm leaf, and it stops the film rubbing off on the walk.
Candelilla wax: a wax from a desert shrub, and it firms the film up.
Sunflower wax: a wax made from sunflower oil, and it helps the film stay put in the cold.
Sunflower oil: a light oil pressed from sunflower seeds, and it carries the vitamin E through the tin.
Jojoba oil: a liquid wax from the jojoba bush, and it sinks in fast, so the paw is not slippery for long.
Vitamin E: a vitamin, and it stops the oils in the tin going off.

There is lavender, rosemary and benzoin in it too. No water, no petroleum jelly, no parabens. This tin has beeswax in it, so it is not vegan. Keep it away from cats.

A snack while it sets

Paws feel slightly slippery for the first minute. Give the dog something to chew while the wax settles, then open the door.

What to look for on the first walk

You can check this one the same day.

• Salt and grit wipe off the pad instead of sticking.
• The dog stops less often to chew at a paw.
• Rub a thumb over the pad. The wax should still be there.

Shield and Restore do different jobs

Paw Shield is a wax. It stays on the surface and keeps things off the pad. Paw Restore is a butter. It sinks in and softens a dry pad.

Shield goes on before the door and gets rinsed off when you come in. Restore goes on at bedtime, on a clean dry paw. Do not put one on top of the other.

How much, and how long a tin lasts

• A thin layer on each pad, before the walk.
• Once a day in ordinary winter weather.
• Twice on a heavy salt day.

Four paws take about 0.2 g of wax, so a 15 g tin is roughly ten weeks of one walk a day. Use it within 6 months of opening.

The rest of the winter routine

Hot pavement in summer does not need a tin. Hold the back of your hand on the asphalt, and if you cannot keep it there, go later.

Winter has an order. Paw Shield before the door. Paw Cleaner when you get back. Paw Restore at night if the pads are dry.
