Paw Restore is a butter for dry, rough pads. You work a little into each pad at night, once the paws are clean and dry. It softens the surface and holds moisture in.

Ingredients, and what they do

Cupuacu butter: a butter from a fruit seed that grows next to cocoa, and it melts at skin temperature, so it goes into the pad instead of sitting on it.
Coconut oil: oil pressed from coconut, and it softens hard skin on the pad.
Hemp seed oil: oil pressed from hemp seed, and it is rich in omega fatty acids that help dry skin hold moisture.
Jojoba oil: a liquid wax from the jojoba bush, and it sinks in quickly.
Candelilla wax: a wax from a desert shrub, and it holds the moisture in overnight.

No water, no petroleum jelly, no parabens. Candelilla instead of beeswax, so this tin is vegan. Keep it away from cats.

A bedtime job

Do it on the sofa with a chew. Four pads take a minute, and by morning the balm has gone into the pad and not onto the floor.

Give it seven nights

Use it every night for a week before you judge it.

• Run a thumb across the pad. It should feel less like sandpaper.
• The dull, chalky look at the edge of the pad softens first.
• Less licking at that paw in the evening.

Restore and Shield do different jobs

Paw Restore is a butter. It sinks in and softens. Paw Shield is a wax that stays on the surface and keeps salt and grit off on the walk.

Restore goes on at bedtime, on a clean dry paw. If the dog wore Shield that day, rinse it off first. Petroleum jelly sits on the skin. This is oils and butter, and it goes into the pad.

How much, and how long a tin lasts

• A thin layer on each pad.
• Every night while the pads are rough.
• Two or three nights a week once they are soft again.
• On clean, dry, unbroken skin only.

Four paws take about 0.2 g, so a 15 g tin is roughly ten weeks of nightly use. Use it within 6 months of opening.

When a pad is not a balm job

A pad that is split open, bleeding or sore needs a vet. So does a dog whose nose and pads are both changing at once.

Dry elbows and body are Skin Relief Balm. A crusty nose is Snout Saver. Pads have an order: Paw Shield before the walk, Paw Cleaner at the door, Paw Restore at night.
