Skin Relief Balm is for small patches of dry, unbroken skin: elbows, hocks, the chin, a dry spot under the coat. A thin layer softens the skin and holds moisture in.

Dry, or scratching

Dry skin looks dull and flaky, sits where the dog lies down, and does not bother the dog. That is what this balm is for.

A dog that scratches all day, or skin that is red, bald, wet or smelly, is a vet visit. A balm will not change that and on broken skin it makes things worse.

Ingredients, and what they do

Cocoa butter: a firm butter from the cocoa bean, and it softens dry patches.
Sunflower oil: a light oil pressed from sunflower seeds, and it is high in vitamin E.
Jojoba oil: a liquid wax from the jojoba bush, and it sinks in quickly under the coat.
Sea buckthorn: an orange oil pressed from a small berry, and it is rich in fatty acids that help the skin hold moisture.
Chamomile: an extract from the chamomile flower, and it is part of the mild smell of the balm.
Lavender: an oil from the lavender plant, and it is most of what the balm smells of.
Vitamin E: a vitamin, and it stops the oils in the tin going off.

No water, no petroleum jelly, no parabens, no beeswax, so this tin is vegan. Keep away from cats.

It disappears into the coat

Warm a little between your fingers and it goes on as an oil. Work it down to the skin against the lie of the coat, then smooth the coat back.

Elbows take a fortnight

Thin patches change in a few days. A thick grey elbow is slow, so give it 14 nights.

• The edge of the patch stops flaking first.
• The skin feels less papery under a thumb.
• Fewer flakes on the bedding.

Which tin, if you buy one

How much, and how long a tin lasts

• A thin layer, rubbed in.
• Once a day while the skin is rough.
• Two or three times a week after that.
• On clean, dry, unbroken skin only, and never inside a warm damp face fold.

Both elbows take about 0.2 g, so a 15 g tin is roughly ten weeks of nightly use. Use within 6 months of opening.

The rest of the routine

Washing a dog too often dries the skin out, and once every four to six weeks suits most. A hard floor makes elbows worse, so a soft mat does half the job for free.
